Executive Producer: Michael Jackson From the album Dangerous, released November 26, 1991 Released as a single January 14, 1992 THE SHORT FILM Director: John Singleton Primary Production Location: Los Angeles, California Michael Jackson's short film for "Remember the Time" was the second of nine short films produced for recordings from Dangerous, Michael's fourth album as an adult solo performer. As a single, "Remember the Time" reached the Top 5 in nine countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Ireland and New Zealand (where it reached No. 1). "Remember the Time" was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on March 16, 1992. In 1993, the single won an American Music Award for Favorite Soul Single and a Soul Train Award for Best Single (Male). Both "Remember the Time" and its predecessor "Black or White" received a BMI Urban Award in 1993 for being two of the most performed songs of the year. Once again, Michael pushed the boundaries of the music video medium with "Remember the Time," crafting a star-studded, nine-minute epic set in ancient Egypt. A pharaoh (Eddie Murphy) and his queen (Iman) seek new entertainment for the court. After a palace guard (Magic Johnson) presents jugglers and fire-eaters to no interest from the royals, a black-robed wizard shocks the court by disintegrating before reforming as a gold-clad Michael Jackson, whose romantic song and dance directed at the queen angers the pharaoh. Michael is chased throughout the kingdom by the pharaoh's guards, pausing to briefly romance the queen and lead a hip-hop dance breakdown before spinning and turning to sand, evading the guards once and for all. In the short films for the Bad album, Michael continued to expand the possibilities of the "music video" as art form, working with high-profile collaborators to realize his artistic visions. Acclaimed commercial director Joe Pytka made his mark on music videos with the short films for both "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "Dirty Diana," from Bad. In the film, a gang of brash young men pursues a girl, portrayed by model Tatiana Thumbtzen. Emerging from a crowd of these potential suitors and encouraged to "be yourself" by an old man (played by actor Joe Seneca), Michael gets the girl's attention, singing and dancing to "The Way You Make Me Feel" as his friends look on. Michael's short film for "Rock With You" was the second of the three short films produced for recordings from that album. The single reached No. 1 in the United States in 1980, topping Billboard's Hot 100 and Hot R&B Singles charts and reaching No. 4 on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 chart that same year. "Rock With You" was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on February 14, 1980, and Platinum of February 14, 1989. The song was ranked No. 82 on Rolling Stone and MTV's list of the 100 Greatest Pop Songs in 2000. In his 1988 memoir Moonwalk, Michael called "Rock With You," written by Rod Temperton, "the sort of thing I was aiming for" in creating an album to his vision. The short film featured Michael performing the song on a plain stage in a sequined jumpsuit and matching boots, a set of shimmering lasers illuminating his outfit from behind. Director Bruce Gowers praised Michael as "an absolute professional" in an interview with Rolling Stone. Michael Jackson - Man In The Mirror (Official Video)

In keeping with the lyrical message of "Man in the Mirror," which was strongly identified with Michael Jackson and reflective of his own philosophies, the short film features powerful images of events and leaders whose work embodies the song's message to "make that change." Rolling Stone praised the short film in 2014 as "a powerful statement to deliver to personality-driven MTV." From the album Bad, released August 31, 1987 Released as a single January 16, 1988 THE SHORT FILM Director: Don Wilson Michael Jackson's short film for "Man in the Mirror" was the third of nine short films produced for recordings from Bad, one of the best selling albums of all time. The "Man in the Mirror" single hit No. 1 in four countries in 1988, topping the charts in the United States, Italy, Belgium and Poland and reaching Top 5 in Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. In the U.S., "Man in the Mirror" was the fourth of five consecutive No. 1 singles from one album on the Billboard Hot 100-making Michael the first artist to achieve this milestone. "Man in the Mirror," written by Siedah Garrett (Michael's duet partner on "I Just Can't Stop Loving You") and Glen Ballard, is one of only two songs on Bad not written by Michael Jackson and, even though it wasn't a song he wrote himself, it was a message that was strongly identified with him and reflective of his own philosophies, as demonstrated through his actions and expressed in some of his own lyrics. "'Man in the Mirror' has a great message," he wrote in his 1988 memoir Moonwalk. "I love that song. ..Start with yourself. Don't be looking at all the other things. Start with you. That's the truth." A review of Bad in Rolling Stone in 1987 called the song "among the half dozen best things Jackson has done." In contrast to Michael's other short films of the Bad era, "Man of the Mirror" tells a story not through performance, but through powerful images of oppression, homelessness, hunger, police brutality and other ills of the world, as well as events and leaders of the 20th century whose work is reflective of the song's message to "make that change." The ""Billie Jean"" single reached No. 1 in 10 countries in the spring of 1983, including seven consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 - becoming the second-highest selling single in America that same year. ""Billie Jean"" was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on April 4, 1983, and Platinum on February 4, 1989. The song won two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance - Male, as well as an American Music Award for Favorite Single - Pop/Rock and was also named the Single of the Year on The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics' poll in 1983. A specially created set featured steps and sidewalk tiles that lit up underneath Michael's feet. It is here that fans first saw some of Michael's best-known dance moves, such as spinning and landing on his toes. Many of Michael's steps and mannerisms in the video would become forever associated with The King of Pop. ""[W]hen the chorus hit.he sprung into this dance that was unlike anything I'd ever seen,"" director Steve Barron recounted of Jackson's choreography in the video. ""It was just extraordinary, instinctive. He pulled it all together and turned it into what we saw.The camera literally steamed up, the eyepiece steamed up, because of my heat from what I was seeing."" Barron also recalled the crew breaking into spontaneous applause after Michael finished dancing. The ""Billie Jean"" short film made history as the first video by a black artist to be played in heavy rotation on MTV, then in its second year. In 1992, the short film was inducted into the Music Video Producers Hall of Fame. MTV ranked ""Billie Jean"" as the 35th greatest music video of all time in 1999, one of three entries of Jackson's on the chart alongside ""Thriller"" and ""Beat It."" Co-Produced by Bruce Swedien Executive Producer: Michael Jackson From the album Dangerous, released November 28, 1991 Released as a single December 1, 1993 THE SHORT FILM Director: Bill DiCicco Michael Jackson's short film for "Gone Too Soon" was the ninth and final short film produced for recordings from Dangerous, Michael's fourth album as an adult solo performer. While "Gone Too Soon" was not released as a single in the United States, it reached the Top 10 in France and Zimbabwe, and became Michael's ninth Top 40 hit from Dangerous in the United Kingdom-an achievement shared with Bad for most U.K. Top 40 hits from one album. Michael had befriended Ryan White, a teenager in Indiana who'd accidentally contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion. His subsequent ostracism from his school, and fight to be treated like a normal child, helped raise awareness of AIDS around the world, and Michael developed a close friendship with him. Days before White died in 1990, the last song he listened to was "Man in the Mirror," from the tape deck of the red Mustang convertible Michael had bought for him. During the sessions for Dangerous, to honor Ryan's memory, Michael decided to record "Gone Too Soon," a song co-written by Buz Kohan, whom Michael had known since he was a teenager. Michael had seen "Gone Too Soon" performed by Dionne Warwick on a 1983 TV special honoring the passing of several popular musicians. Released as a single on the fifth annual World AIDS Day, the "Gone Too Soon" short film features photographs and press clippings from Ryan's life, closing with a candid shot of Michael and Ryan together. While "Leave Me Alone," exclusive to the CD edition of Bad, was not released as a single in the United States, it reached the Top 10 in eight countries throughout Europe, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Norway and Ireland (where it reached No. 1). "Leave Me Alone" was the first of Michael's songs to directly comment on the media frenzy that often surrounded him. "The price of fame can be a heavy one," he wrote in his 1988 memoir Moonwalk. "Consider that you really have no privacy. You can't really do anything unless special arrangements are made. The media prints whatever you say. They report whatever you do.I think my image gets distorted in the public's mind. They don't get a clear or full picture of what I'm like." The "Leave Me Alone" short film features images of Michael singing from the fronts of various tabloids and newspapers, before Michael travels by rocket ship through a surreal amusement park built around a giant Michael tied down like Gulliver in the classic book Gulliver's Travels. We follow Michael as he guides the rocket through various send-ups of press reports from his life and career, including a shrine to actress Elizabeth Taylor and even the bones of Joseph Merrick, the "Elephant Man," who Michael dances with toward the end of the short film. Along the way, he picks up his pet chimpanzee, Bubbles, and his boa constrictor, Muscles, and is "hounded" by members of the press, represented as dogs superimposed onto human bodies. At the end of the short film, a giant Michael emerges from the center of the amusement park, breaking free of the roller coaster tracks and other diversions that were built upon him. The "Dirty Diana" single hit No. 1 in two countries in 1988, topping the charts in the United States and Belgium and reaching Top 10 in the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and elsewhere. In the U.S., "Dirty Diana" was the fifth of five consecutive No. 1 singles from one album on the Billboard Hot 100-making Michael the first artist to achieve this milestone. The "Dirty Diana" short film captures the high-intensity live experience of a concert performance, featuring Michael and members of his Bad World Tour band alongside Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens, who played lead guitar on the track. Michael sings and dances to the song, as the action periodically cuts to footage of a beautiful girl exiting a car and walking through an alley. At the end of the short film, Michael leaves the stage and opens a car door, where the mysterious woman is waiting for him. Stevens would later recount his awe at Jackson's energetic performance in the video, at one point sliding through the guitarist's legs as he played. In 1989, the 2nd Annual World Music Awards named "Dirty Diana" the Viewers Choice No. 1 Video. Michael himself was inducted into the World Music Hall of Fame that same year. "She's Out of My Life" was the third and final short film created for 'Off the Wall.' Michael's short film for "She's Out of My Life" was the third of the three short films produced for recordings from that album. The single reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1980, giving Michael Jackson the distinction of being the first solo artist to have four Top 10 singles from the same album. The song also reached the Top 10 in Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland. "She's Out of My Life" was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on February 14, 1989. The song became a fan favorite due to Michael's emotional performances of it, both in the studio and in concert. When recording the song, Michael would cry at the end of every take. "The words suddenly had such a strong effect on me," Michael later wrote in his 1988 memoir Moonwalk. "I had been letting so much build up inside of me.but if it touched people's heartstrings, knowing that would make me feel less lonely." The song became a fixture of Jackson's Bad and Dangerous World Tours, during which Michael would approach the front of the stage and sing directly to a fan. The short film featured Michael performing the song while seated on a stool, with only a spotlight illuminating him. Bruce Gowers directed the short films for both "Rock With You" and "She's Out of My Life" on the same day. "Very emotional he was in that. I was worried that he was actually going to break down and cry," Gowers said in an interview with Rolling Stone. In 2014, the magazine ranked "She's Out of My Life" No. 17 on a list of Michael Jackson's 20 Greatest Videos, praising Jackson's groundbreaking use of "stark performance videos.showing him capable of carrying a highly intense video." The "Bad" single hit No. 1 in three countries in 1987, topping the charts in the United States, Spain and the Netherlands and reaching Top 5 in the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Australia and elsewhere. In the U.S., "Bad" was the second of five consecutive No. 1 singles from one album on the Billboard Hot 100-making Michael the first artist to achieve this milestone. Inspired by the real-life story of Edmund Perry, a prep school graduate from Harlem whose shooting death by a plainclothes policeman galvanized New York City, "Bad" stars Michael as Darryl, a student returning to his inner-city home while on break from a prestigious academy. In the short film's extended black and white sequence, Darryl comes into conflict with his neighborhood friends (led by actor Wesley Snipes in a breakthrough role) after showing discomfort over their attempts at petty crime. Angrily dismissed by his friends for no longer being "bad," Darryl challenges them in an abandoned subway station. As the film suddenly transitions to color, Darryl, clad in the black leather outfit Michael wears on the Bad album sleeve, leads a troupe of dancers in a high energy performance of "Bad," asserting his toughness without resorting to violence and ultimately earning the respect of his peers. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" was the first short film of Michael Jackson's solo career, filmed in 1979 for the No. 1 hit single from 'Off the Wall.' From the album Off the Wall, released August 10, 1979 Released as a single July 10, 1979 THE SHORT FILM Director: Nick Saxon Although all of Michael Jackson's music videos are referred to as short films, the short films for Off the Wall, Michael's first solo album for Epic Records, are more classic "music videos," as they are performance clips rather than scripted stories. Michael's short film for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" was the first of the three short films produced for recordings from that album. The single reached No. 1 in eight countries in 1979, topping Billboard's Hot 100, Hot Soul Singles and Hot Disco Singles charts as well as the Cash Box Top 100. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on November 29, 1979, and Platinum on February 14, 1989. The song won Michael his first solo Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 1980, as well as his first American Music Award for Favorite Single (Soul/R&B). "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" was ranked No. 9 on the 100 Best Songs of the '70s by NME and No. 16 on VH1's list of 100 Greatest Dance Songs. "That song means a lot to me because it was the first song I wrote as a whole," Michael wrote in his 1988 memoir Moonwalk. "'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' was my first big chance, and it went straight to Number One. It was the song that won me my first Grammy. Quincy had the confidence in me to encourage me to go into the studio by myself, which I appreciated." The short film featured Michael in performance against a dazzling background of geometric shapes and patterns. Wearing a tuxedo similar to his outfit on the Off the Wall album cover, Jackson sings and dances to the song, at one point even dancing with two other clones of himself, achieved through the magic of special effects.
